Community Boat…continued from front page

Active Works members Malcolm Ferris-Lay and Barry Jones have recently obtained the Certificate in Community Boat Management (CCBM) which enables them to "skipper" a Community Boat with up to 12 passengers on inland waterways. The certificate is issued by the National Community Boat Association and is recognised by British Waterways and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

There are several community boats based at Harlow and they enable disadvantaged and special needs groups to get afloat and benefit from our waterways. Working one of these boats requires the crew to master good teamwork, effective communication and the ability to get along with people.

Currently, another charity, the Canal Boat Project operate four boats from their mooring at Burnt Mill Lock and the Royal London Society for the Blind canal boat "Golden Duck" (shown below) is also based nearby..
